For the Birds: A chamber suite with music, poetry, comedy, tragedy, artistry

Uniting the new music of Zeitgeist with the verbal creativity of humorist and writer Kevin Kling and the music of composer Victor Zupanc, For the Birds is truly a show for everyone.

This tour de force joins storytelling with musical interludes, songs and poetry in a one-hour musical and theatrical event. “Crow” delves into family relations. “Canadian Geese” explores marriage and loss. “Rooster” reveals our less noble tendencies. And “Hummingbirds” reminds us not to forget to live.

Through the combination of Kling’s insightful words, Zupanc’s colorful musical setting and Zeitgeist’s exuberant performance, For the Birds illuminates our human need for inspiration and imagination, and it offers a space to contemplate ourselves as individuals, families, communities and a species.

Take flight on wings of fancy and delight with For the Birds.

Converging Traditions

Seeking to expand the boundaries and sounds of new music, Zeitgeist offers a rare concert experience in Converging Traditions. In this concert of world premieres, composers Paul Elwood, a renowned banjo player, and Chinese pipa player Gao Hong strum along with Zeitgeist. This unique concert finds the common ground between traditional Chinese music and the bluegrass sounds of Appalachia.

A banjo champion, Colorado-based Paul Elwood regularly performs in the realms of bluegrass, free improvisation and new music. Gao Hong is a member of the Carleton College music faculty and is a master of the Chinese pipa, a pear-shaped lute.

Pine Eyes

Composed by Martin Bresnick
Performed by Zeitgeist
Directed by Robert Bresnick
Animation by Leslie Weinberg

"The becoming of a fully-sentient and caring human being is a journey that we all make."
— Martin Bresnick

A dark and delightful evening--length multimedia work based on Carlo Collodi's beloved The Adventures of Pinnocchio, Pine Eyes is a rich mixture of music, words, and film—a compelling adventure for the imagination that will captivate audiences of all ages.

Shape Shifting: Shades of Transformation

"A once in a lifetime experience."
— William Randall Beard, Minnesota Public Radio

Shape Shifting gathers the talents of Zeitgeist, composer Scott Miller, poet Philippe Costaglioli, and videoartist Ron Gregg to create an evening-length artistic response to the promising yet perilous nature of change. Sound immerses the listener in a lush electronic environment while poetic and musical interaction evokes sensuous landscapes and timeless truths in English, French, and Catalan. Enveloping all, transcendent images create a world of abstraction and dream out of everyday realities and overlooked environmental spaces.

Sound Stage

By Paul Dresher
Performed by Zeitgeist and Paul Dresher

"Forget the drum circle. Forget the hurdy-gurdy. This beats all...It's a musical jungle gym—every square inch playable...80 minutes of non-stop performance...a cross-pollination of music, visual art and theater limited only by the imagination."
— Minneapolis Star Tribune

With a 17-foot tall double pendulum, magnificent music, vivid lights, and deadpan wit, Sound Stage is a brilliant celebration of making music from the ground up—way, way up!

Perfect for families—audience welcome to play the instruments after the show!
