ZEITGEIST

PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF OUR TIME

Picture

EVEN IF I MUST GO PROGRAM INFORMATION

Return to the series page for tickets and information.

even if I must go is a hour-long musical ritual held as the day turns to dusk. It features 8 musicians who surround the audience seated in the middle of a field. Musical sounds, many reminiscent of nature, recede and then come near, blurring the lines between human and non-human environmental sound. Performers will include Zeitgeist members Patti Cudd, Pat O'Keefe, Nikki Melville, and Heather Barringer plus guest artists Philip Blackburn, Alyssa Anderson, Emma Plehal, and Nirmali Fenn.

even if I must go is inspired by this poem by A. R. Ammons

death is so persuasive, can't life be: it is
fashionable now to mean nothing, not to exist

because meaning doesn't hold, and we do not exist
forever; this is forever, we are now in it: our

eyes see through the round time of nearly all
of being, our minds reach out and in ten billion

years: we are in so much forever, we pay it no
mind, we'd rather think of today's shopping or

next week's day off: but we will not be in
forever forever, that is the dropout: is it

too much to be in forever a while: dead we are
out of time and forever, both: I want to get

around to where I can say I'm glad I was here,
even if I must go: I want to believe that the

possibility given me to be here was not a betrayal
or trap or hoax but a trial of the possibility

-A. R. Ammons, Garbage

Anderson Center Sculpture Garden
Established in 1996 by the Anderson Center—with support from the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources—the Anderson Center Sculpture Garden spans 15 acres, making it one of the largest of its kind in Minnesota. The garden showcases more than 30 sculptures by renowned national and international artists, such as Charles Biederman, Siah Armajani, and Zoran Mojsilov. Designed as both a cultural and ecological destination, the space features mesic prairie landscapes, panoramic views of the Cannon River valley, and amenities like benches, picnic spots, and interpretive signage. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful environment that honors the region’s original ecosystem while engaging with significant works of contemporary art.

Pictured is the sculpture Physical Tension (2003) by Megan Madland.

Performance will be on an a field next to the park. Park in the Sculpture park parking lot.
