ZEITGEIST

PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF OUR TIME

2005-2006 Season

Admirable Eccentrics
Oct 28-29; Nov 4-6, 2005, Studio Z

Ahead of their time, often misunderstood, Zeitgeist’s June concert pays tribute to visionary musicians unafraid to forge new paths through the world of musical possibilities, creating powerful sonic legacies and inspiring generations to come. Featuring the world premiere of Admirable Eccentrics by Twin Cities composer Carol Barnett plus works by Eric Stokes, Charles Ives, Giacinto Scelsi, Conlon Nancarrow, Hermeto Pascoal, and Captain Beefheart.  Featuring soprano Janet Gotschall Fried.

Sound Stage
A New Music Theater Work about Making Music

Jan. 6-7, 2006, The Southern Theater

Sound Stage is an extraordinary new work that explores the means and meaning of music-making.  Combining a set built entirely of huge invented musical instruments, traditional instrumental virtuosity, deadpan physical humor, vivid lighting design, and a spare text filled with sly wit and real science, the work playfully explores the physics of sound and the mystery of music's emotional power in our lives.
Conceived and composed by Paul Dresher
Performed by Zeitgeist with Paul Dresher
Direction and text by Rinde Eckert
Lighting Design by Alex Nichols
Instruments designed and constructed by Daniel Schmidt and Paul Dresher
Produced by Zeitgeist and the Paul Dresher Ensemble

Playing It Close to Home
March 18, 2006, Unity Church-Unitarian, St. Paul

Works by Minnesota Composers Phil Fried, Bill Banfield , Webster Magnet School Students, and our Eric Stokes Song Contest Winners. The event will also feature guest vocalists Krystal Banfield and Janet Gotschall Fried.

Pine Eyes
June 3, 2006, Walker Art Center McGuire Theater

Zeitgeist will return to the Walker Art Center stage with the world premiere of Pine Eyes, a dark and delightful evening-length multimedia work based on Carlo Collodi’s beloved The Adventures of Pinocchio. Composed and narrated by Martin Bresnick, directed by Robert Bresnick, and featuring animation by Leslie Weinberg, Pine Eyes is a rich mixture of music, words, and film—a compelling adventure for the imagination that captivates audiences of all ages. Co-commissioned by the Walker, Timothy Beyer, Andrew Rindfleisch, and the Zeitgeist Commissioning Collective.
