Drawing on McTavish’s past work in ecosystem modeling, the work considers the delicacy of ecosystems, our human quest to recover those systems, and what it might mean to be the last of a species left alive. Inuksuit Aug. 17, 2014 at Caponi Art Park INUKSUIT, by Alaskan composer John Luther Adams, is a composition for up to 99 percussionist that is meant to be performed outdoors. The title refers to a type of stone landmark used by native peoples of the Arctic region to navigate the Arctic landscape, and the music is designed to help us understand and connect with our environment. Musicians will be dispersed throughout the park playing a wide variety of percussion instruments, including drums, cymbals, conch shells, and sirens. The music they play will blend with the sounds of nature in the park, and listeners can move freely throughout the area to experience the music from different places. |
