7:30 p.m. Alyssa Anderson and Kyle Hutchins present an eclectic program of new music for voice and saxophone: jewface - Steven Crane Un Lieu Verdoyant: Hommage à Gérard Grisey - Philippe Leroux The Old House - Lori Laitman Roggenbuck Lieder - Daniel Nass if two things don't fit, but you believe both of them, thinking that somewhere, hidden, there must be a third thing that connects them - Ted Moore Is it? - Thomas Kessler Mezzo-soprano Alyssa Anderson’s vocal repertoire spans the ages from Baroque masterpieces to contemporary experimental music, with a focus on American and twentieth-century artsong and chamber music. A native of Falconer, NY, Alyssa received her BM in Vocal Performance from SUNY, College at Fredonia, and she completed her MM and DMA in Performance at the University of Minnesota with a doctoral thesis on the solo vocal music of American composer Henry Cowell. Alyssa has appeared as a soloist with the Minnesota Oratorio Society, the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, Twin Cities Lyric Theater, RenegadeEnsemble, the University of Minnesota’s New Music Ensemble, the University of Minnesota’s Bach Festival, the Jamestown Choral Society, the Fredonia College Choir, and Fredonia’s Festival Chorus. Alyssa is also the founder and artistic director of La Bonne Chanson, an artsong performance ensemble. Alyssa is a 2013 recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. Jeffery Kyle Hutchins is a soloist, chamber musician, improviser, and performance artist focusing on the promotion and creation of contemporary music and interdisciplinary media. He has premiered over 60 new works for the saxophone, performed recitals in Asia, Europe, and North America, has recorded on Avid Sound Records, Emeritus Records, Farpoint Recordings, and Klavier Records, and has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards including prizes from Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), DOWNBEAT Student Music Awards, the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, and New Music USA, among others. Hutchins is a member of AVIDduo, an alumni of both RenegadeEnsemble and the Contemporary Music Workshop, and has been a guest artist with Spitting Image Collective and the Zeitgeist New Music Ensemble. Hutchins received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Minnesota under Eugene Rousseau. He currently teaches at the University of Northern Iowa. Jeffery Kyle Hutchins is a Yamaha Performing Artist and plays E. Rousseau mouthpieces exclusively.
Zeitgeist
8:30 p.m. Zeitgeist’s performance each evening includes Genesis VII by Janika Vandervelde, Infidelity of Dreams by Amanda Schoofs, and A Certain Degree of Neurosis by Gene Pritsker. Lauded for providing “a once-in-a-lifetime experience for adventurous concertgoers,” Zeitgeist is a new music chamber ensemble comprised of two percussion, piano and woodwinds. One of the longest established new music groups in the country, Zeitgeist commissions and presents a wide variety of new music for audiences in the Twin Cities and on tour. Always eager to explore new artistic frontiers, Zeitgeist collaborates with poets, choreographers, directors, visual artists and sound artists of all types to create imaginative new work that challenges the boundaries of traditional chamber music. The members of Zeitgeist are: Heather Barringer, percussion; Patti Cudd, percussion; Pat O’Keefe, woodwinds; Nicola Melville, piano. Dave Hagedorn Quartet
9:30 p.m. Dave Milne, saxes; Phil Hey, drums; Chris Bates, bass; and Dave Hagedorn, vibes, have been performing together in various groups for many years, and most recently in this particular configuration since summer of 2015. The musical communication level of this group is exceptionally strong, which results in exciting in the moment performances. The group will be playing a few pieces from the standard jazz repertoire, as well as works by Dave Milne and Chris Bates, with an emphasis is on interactive improvisation. Dave Hagedorn directs the jazz bands and percussion ensemble at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. He is an active and eclectic performer in the Twin Cities area. Gigs range all over the musical map, from playing vibes with jazz groups at the Artists' Quarter to performing as a percussionist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Opera Orchestra. Hagedorn is a Yamaha Performing Artist. His album SolidLiquid was released October 2003 on the Artegra label. |
