With winning songs from our Eric Stokes Song Contest plus music by local composer Abbie Betinis, our annual Playing it Close to Home concert celebrates the wealth of musical creativity found right here in our own backyard. The program includes the world premiere of Betinis’s new work commissioned by Zeitgeist plus Nattsanger, her award-winning song cycle featuring guest soprano Alyssa Anderson.
Abbie Betinis writes music called “inventive, richly melodic” (New York Times). A recent McKnight Artist Fellow, and listed in NPR Music’s Top 100 Composers Under Forty, she has written nearly 50 commissioned pieces and has been composer-in-residence with The Schubert Club, The Rose Ensemble and The Singers–Minnesota Choral Artists. The Eric Stokes Song Contest is sponsored by Zeitgeist in memory of late composer Eric Stokes; the contest was designed to encourage and celebrate amateur composers throughout the Twin Cities. Minneapolis composer Käri Tweiten is this year’s the adult category winner, and the youth winners are Charlie Lincoln (17) and two-time winner Riona Ryan (18). *Saturday’s performance includes wine, hors d'oeuvres, and a post-concert reception with Abbie Betinis. Tickets can be securely purchased by credit card or through your PayPal account in advance, or by cash, check, or credit card at the door. Tickets purchased online will be held at the door.
