Celebrating 10 years of collaboration between Zeitgeist and composer Scott Miller, Zeitgeist looks back on a decade of artistic partnership with one of the Twin Cities' most adventurous composers. The event marks the release of Miller’s new album Tipping Point with music from the CD and the reprise of Shape Shifting: Shades of Transformation, a lush electro-acoustic musical landscape with sensuous poetry by Phillipe Costaglioli.
Guest artists include soprano Tracey Engleman, the return of Zeitgeist veteran pianist Shannon Wettstein (sitting in for Nicola Melville), and an encore performance on June 13 by electroacoustic improvisation ensemble Fifth Column (Scott Miller & Brett Wartchow, electronics; Pat O’Keefe & Nathan Hanson, woodwinds; Erik Fratzke, guitars). Scott Miller is a composer of electroacoustic, orchestral, chamber, choral and multimedia works described as ‘high adventure avant garde music of the best sort’ (Classical-Modern Music Review) and 'inspir[ing] real hope & optimism for the future of electroacoustic music.' Known for his interactive electroacoustic chamber music and experimental performance pieces, Miller has twice been named a McKnight Composer Fellow, he is a Fulbright Scholar, and his work has been recognized by numerous international arts organizations. Recordings are available on New Focus Recordings, Innova, Eroica, CRS, rarescale and SEAMUS, and his music is published by ACA (American Composers Alliance), Tetractys, and Jeanné. Miller is a Professor of Music at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, where he teaches composition, electroacoustic music and theory. He is currently President of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the U.S. (SEAMUS). He holds degrees from The University of Minnesota, The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and the State University of New York at Oneonta, and has studied composition at the Czech-American Summer Music Institute and the Centre de Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis. Scott Miller feature in the Saint Cloud Times Fifth Column is an exciting new ensemble featuring some of the Twin Cities most adventurous improvisers and electroacoustic musicians performing structured improvisations, free improv and interactive electroacoustic music. The project is the brainchild of composer/improviser Scott Miller, and supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board. The core ensemble is a quartet of two woodwind and two laptop performers, traveling to a variety of Minnesota communities and presenting concerts with local performers.
With a voice the Boston Globe called “extraordinary in range, tonal quality, musicianship, and dramatic effect,“ soprano Tracey Engleman has gained a reputation for excellence in opera, recital, and concert. Ms. Engleman has performed operatic roles with the Minnesota Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Skylark Opera, and performed as soloist with the Minnesota Choral Union, the Chicago Chamber Musicians, the Milwaukee Bel Canto Chorus, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Valley Chamber Chorale, the Rochester Aria Group and numerous other regional orchestras.
Ms. Engleman has also won numerous awards including the Austin Lyric Opera Young Artist Competition in Austin, Texas, the Milwaukee Bel Canto Chorus Regional Artist Competition, the Minnesota NATS Artist Award, and was a regional finalist in the 2002-2003 Metropolitan Opera Auditions. Ms. Engleman performed with the St. Olaf Orchestra at Alice Tulley Hall and has performed Britten’s War Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42 and Elijah and Barber’s Prayers of Kierkegaard with the Chapel Choir and the St. Olaf Orchestra. Ms. Engleman spent two summers as a Vocal Fellow at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center where she coached with Phyllis Curtin, Dawn Upshaw, Martin Katz, Ken Griffiths, and Lucy Shelton and has performed the music of several of the worlds most prominent contemporary composers. Ms. Engleman earned a B.M. degree in both vocal performance and K-12 vocal music education from St. Olaf College and M.M. and D.M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota.
