ZEITGEIST
MUSIC OF OUR TIME

Picture

Zeitgeist 2020-2021 Season

Throughout the summer, Zeitgeist has been developing a plan to continue our work for the 2020/2021 concert season. We believe it best to assume we won't be able to present the 35+ live performances that are typical in our season, and so we are concentrating on collaborations with composers to create new works, most of which will be presented online, virtually, or through recorded means. If live performances should become feasible, we will adapt our plans so that audiences can join us in Studio Z once again.

Here are our plans for 2020/2021:

  • COINCIDENT is a multi-episode work featuring acoustic and electronic music, film, set installation, and storytelling. The primary vision of composer Scott L. Miller, COINCIDENT (working title) is highly collaborative in nature, and will include the creative contributions of Zeitgeist, installation designer Carole Kim, and a number of storytellers/wordsmiths/writers (the first one will be Minnesota artist Joe Horton!).

  • HERE AND THERE, our touring exchange with No Exit New Music Ensemble, will happen via live broadcast and will feature the premiere of a new work for Zeitgeist by Nassim Khorassani.

  • Our EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL featuring the music of Frederic Rzewski will feature Zeitgeist and other musicians from our community and beyond! Performances will be designed especially for online enjoyment and will include several works from throughout Rzewski's career.

  • Zeitgeist has a long list of new works that simply must be RECORDED and released to the public on our website. This year's recordings will feature works by Julie Johnson, Asuka Kakitani, Randy Bauer, and many others.

  • SOUNDING GROUND is a new commissioning project that engages artists and audiences alike through the creation of new musical works designed to be presented in a non-live or outdoor setting. New works created for Sounding Ground will be composed by Queen Drea, Jonathan Posthuma, Michelle Kinney, Douglas Ewart, Yan Pang, and Shruthi Rajasekar.

  • STUDIO Z ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE provides creative space at no cost to three BIPOC musicians for a term of six months throughout the 2020-2021 season. Musicians in residence can use facilities at Studio Z to rehearse, develop work, livestream, and record new work.

  • Our LOWERTOWN LISTENING SESSIONS will take the form of online interviews, musical demonstrations, and interactive discussions with Zeitgeist, composers, and listeners.
